Background:

The Minnie Starkman Memorial Library began in the 1960’s as a collection of 50 paperbacks. In 2014 the Library celebrated its 60th Birthday.  Initially the Library was housed in the Chancery of the U.S. Embassy, but moved to space next to the Embassy’s commissary at Gate B in the early 1970s.  The Library expanded in the mid 1990’s with the addition of more rooms as well as a 2 story high treehouse – a huge attraction for young readers.  The library moved to its current location in 2013.

The Library has grown to more than 18,000 titles including fiction, non-fiction, biographies, reference and resource materials, a children’s section and an extensive section of Indian fiction and non-fiction. Most of our books are generously donated by AWA and other Library members.  The library welcomes donations of books and magazines. Duplicate copies are sold to benefit the library.  The Library stall at the AWA Mela is one of the most popular places to buy books and volunteer for a few hours.

Members of the U.S. Embassy community, including locally employed staff, ACSA, Bank of America and “red” badge holders are eligible to join. There is no annual fee for AWA members. Non-AWA members subscribe for an annual fee.  Your AWA membership cards includes an AWA Library card as well.  Embassy badge holders will use their badge for entry..

Members can check books out for 3 weeks and can renew them via email or telephone for an additional week.  Most books can be renewed for an additional 3 weeks when they are brought into the checkout desk.  DVDs and CDs can be checked out for a 2 week period.

Overdue fines are Rs.5 per day with a maximum of Rs.100 per book, DVD or CD. Please return books during hours of operation or place them in the library Book Drop, located in the last door of the library. Overdue fines will be assessed at the next check out.  We ask patrons to replace or pay for lost or damaged books.

The library also has a great selection of secondhand books for sale at very reasonable prices. Come and have a look!
